Worm-like animals are found deep beneath the surface of the earth, in the depth of 3,6 kilometers. It is the deepest living animal ever found on earth. This nematode species called Halicephalobus mephisto shows that there are living environment deep beneath our stomps of feet.

H. mephisto has the length of 0.5 millimeters. “Small, but it is a big discovery to me,” said Tullis Onstott, geomicrobiology expert from, Princeton University of New Jersey. These worms live by consuming microbe.

Onstott and worm expert Gaetan Borgonie from University of Ghent, Belgia found H. mephisto inside a gold mine in South Africa. They drilled deep inside the gold mine to get water from the depth. The researcher team found the caterpillars after 31.582 liters of water pumped.

The team also found that this worm species has existed for thousands of years. The confirmation about the date based on the isotope showed that the worm species came between 3.000 to 12.000 years ago. ‘This indicates the animal has evolved to survive from pressure and high temperature,’ explained by the researcher.

Onstott hopes this discovery will inspire other researchers to find more complex existence in various extreme places, whether on earth or other places.

Onstott’s research is also a follow-up from the discovery of bacteria species in the depth of about 3 kilometers. Onstott wanted to know other life existence consuming those bacteria and narrow the research on nematode – known as the life form on earth capable of surviving in any condition.

Researchers had cautioned that men who use mobile phone have to face the risk of damaging their fertility or become sterile. This is result of a research cited from Zeenews.com, Sunday (22/5).

According to the newest study led by a researcher from University of Kingdom, Ontario, the researchers found that mobile phone may cause decrease the quality of men’s sperm and decrease in the fertility in men.
The researchers also found that men who use mobile phone do not only have higher level of testosterone in their bodies but also have lower level of luteinizing hormone (LH), reproductive hormone that are excreted by the hypo-physis gland in the brain.

“Our finding is rather interesting. We hope to find an entirely different result, but the result is that we found that may be there are some interesting mechanism on the way it works,” said Rany Shamloul, the postdoctoral member in the Department of Pharmacology and Taxycology who is also the main researcher in the project.

The researchers hypothesized that the electromagnetic waves (EMW) produced by a mobile phone have a double action over the level of men’s hormone and fertility. EMW can improve the number of the cells it the testicles that produce testosterone, but by lowering down the level of LH produced by the pituitary gland, EMW can also obstacles the conversion to distribute this type of testosterone to the more active forms. The form of the testosterone relates to the production of sperm and fertility.
