baby, cow's milk, bovine lactoferrinLow weight for a baby could be seriously impacted. one of them is death. protein contained in cow’s milk was nutritious reduces the blood infections that can lead to death of low weight babies less than 1.5 Kg.

findings of the “Journal of the American Medical Association” was mentioned, low weight babies who were given milk protein lactoferrin with probiotic bacteria during the first week since the birth reduces the risk of sepsis (blood infection) significantly.

according to Dr.paolo Manzoni, experts neonatology in S.anna hospital, Turin, Italy, to prevent sepsis in newborns can be done with a simple, inexpensive, can be tolerated by the infant, and can be done in all countries, including poor countries.

however, isolated protein from cow’s milk is called “bovine lactoferrin,” use not approved in the United States. it is of course regrettable Dr.David Kaufman, researchers and experts in neonatal care “University of Virginia medical school.” he said, many premature babies can not survive because of infection. He hoped bovine lactoferrin is approved soon so that more babies can be saved.

Manzoni said, since bovine lactoferrin is naturally found in cow’s milk, the researchers did not question the safety aspect in the long run. lactoferrin is also contained in breast milk, but for reasons of concentration and should be genetically engineered, of course more expensive.

conclusion that the importance of “bovine lactoferrin” obtained based on research of 472 infants born in italy weighing less than 1.5 kg. Generally, infants with low weight or very low, too premature.

these infants were divided into 3 groups. the control group who received
placebo, the group that received 100 mg of bovine lactoferrin and bovine group receiving lactoferrin and the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. the addition of probiotics is believed to enhance anti-bacterial properties and anti-fungal of lactoferrin. continued therapy for 30-day low weight babies and infants 45 days to a very low weight.

incidence of sepsis (after 72-hour-old baby) in the control group as much as 17.3% and 5.9% in the lactoferrin group. in the lactoferrin and probiotic group, incidence of sepsis is only 4.6%.

Kaufman noted, with increasing dose and duration of therapy, the results certainly better. He explained, in infants with low weight, gastrointestinal system has not formed perfectly, making it easier for bacteria to move from the digestive tract into the bloodstream, causing infection. lactoferrin helps to kill bacteria and fungi, in the stomach and gastrointestinal tract.

this will make the mucosal layer of the gastrointestinal system is stronger and prevent the bacteria from the intestines move into the bloodstream. providing bovine lactoferrin, added Manzoni, also can reduce the use of antibiotics.
